For many coffee lovers, Finca Sophia is a truly special estate—known for its extremely limited production and uncompromising pursuit of exceptional quality.

A few months after winning the Taiwan Brewers Cup this year, I brewed Sophia Lot 095 roasted by MAME in Switzerland. I was genuinely surprised. At that moment, I thought: this was the best cup of coffee I had brewed all year—perhaps even better than the one I served during competition.

Because of that experience, I later contacted MAME and hoped to source Sophia Lot 095 through them. Unfortunately, that lot had already sold out. However, MAME kindly shared Sophia Lot 094 with me, which is the lot everyone is seeing now.

Compared with Lot 095’s delicate peach character and expressive floral profile, Lot 094 presents a much higher sweetness—reminiscent of muscat grape and syrup made from ripe sweet peach. We are very happy to finally begin sharing Sophia with everyone at Oasis this year.

Finca Sophia

Finca Sophia is located in Nueva Suiza, near Volcán, at an elevation of approximately 1,900–2,100 meters above sea level, and in some plots even higher. This altitude is already close to the practical limit of coffee cultivation.

The farm was established in 2008, not with the goal of stable production, but to answer a single question:

“What happens to coffee flavor when it is grown under extreme environmental conditions?”

This is not an estate built to maximize yield—it is an estate built to pursue the limits of expression.

At such extreme elevation, cherries ripen very slowly, which allows flavors to develop with greater precision and creates a cleaner structure in the cup.

Low temperatures and reduced sunlight further tighten flavor development. Rather than producing explosive intensity, the cup profile feels highly focused, refined, and exceptionally clean.

Nearly the entire farm is planted with Geisha, allowing complete focus on varietal expression—especially floral aromatics, citrus brightness, and elegant white-flower characteristics.

Finca Sophia’s competition record has also made it one of the most respected names in Panama:

2017 – Washed Geisha Champion
2020 – Washed Geisha Champion + Best of Panama Overall Champion
2020 – Natural Geisha, 2nd Place
2023 – Natural Geisha, 2nd Place
2024 / 2025 – Continued top rankings (2nd / 3rd place)

At the 2020 Best of Panama auction, its coffee reached US$1,300 per pound—a historic-level auction price.
